Anime First Impressions: Accel World | Episode 1

With the current feed of anime right now, they really seem to be running out of ideas of some good plot and settings. I expected another cannon fodder when I looked over the cover of Accel World, but man was I wrong.

I guess that when you're out of options, you look towards the future. That's exactly what this story is taking place in. In a future, that really isn't too far off from ours, technology and the Internet will literally be dominant in our lifestyles. With a little device hung around people's necks, they can check their email, take notes in school, and most importantly, enter a virtual reality.

Reki Kawahara is the genius behind this anime. Besides the cyberpunnk and sci-fi themes in Accel World, he's also brought up an interesting theme that can be often seen when roaming the hallways of a highschool, bullying.

The main character is named Haruyuki Arita, a short, chubby student who is often teased at for, well obvious reasons. He feels like he wants to escape into a different world.

Stop! World sucks? Escapism? This is such a dystopia.

It's really appealing somehow. To add a cyberpunkish world with such a common theme is really just… interesting.

I also have to note on the beautiful animation as well. This anime is like tremendously graphicoulicious but the eye-candy and smooth movements of the graphics really shows how modern technology has actually been used to make anime more awesome.

Oh? It seems that Kawahara is also the author and creator of Sword Art Online! Surprise! If you've read or watched the latest SAO stuff, then you know that the guy who made it is a genius.

Give this anime a try. Don't let it fool you with its kiddy-nature at the beginning. This could actually be something pretty awesome.

By the way, if you watch the ending credits, you'll notice that the next episode is probably gonna be action-packed! With nice graphics! Be sure to check it out, 'cause I will!
